About

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) will build four new sidewalk sections in Haines City to enhance pedestrian connectivity. These new segments will link to existing sidewalks, improving safety and accessibility for students walking to school from nearby neighborhoods.

Project Improvements Include:

  • Adding sidewalk along Hornet Drive, East Grace Avenue/Hornet Drive, South 20th Street and East Hinson Avenue
  • Improving accessibility at curb ramps that do not currently meet ADA requirements
  • Improving drainage and reconstructing sections of sidewalk that are broken or damaged
  • Milling, resurfacing and adding crosswalks in the following locations:
    • across South 20th Street at East Hinson Avenue and at Grace Avenue
    • across Carol Avenue and Norma Avenue at South 20th Street
    • across South 21st Street and South 22nd Street at Carol Avenue
  • Replacing driveway aprons that do not meet ADA requirements
  • Replacing fence on the north side of Hornet Drive

The majority of the work is scheduled during the summer when school is out. Lane closures required once school is back in session will be done between 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. or after 4:30 p.m.

  • Week of Sunday, July 13 through Saturday, July 19, 2025:

South 20th Avenue in Haines City will be closed to through traffic at night/overnight tonight from midnight until approximately 6 a.m., Tuesday, July 15. Local traffic will have access to South 20th Street from Carol Avenue, but through traffic will have to use South 21st Street as an alternate route.

Work is located on the south end on South 20th Street near East Grace Avenue, so the westbound lane of East Grace Avenue will also be closed with flaggers directing traffic from Hillview to South 21st Street. The lane and road closures are necessary to perform maintenance work on underground utilities. Use caution and note that the posted speed limit on East Grace Avenue has been reduced to 15 mph during this operation.
